Vol. 4.7 Why you're not getting all you really want in life and the 8 steps to turn it all around |

Through coaching and working with hundreds of people over the last 19 years, I have narrowed down what it is that stops people from really being happy in their lives. This month's edition gives you simple (not always easy!) steps to create what you really desire in your life. My wish for you is to live a full and happy life - why not now? Go for it!
Why are you not getting what you really want out of life? These are the common things that stop people from really living a full life: lack of knowledge, lack of self confidence, lack of time, lack of support, lack of skills, emotional blocks, limiting beliefs about what you are capable of and what you deserve, and not knowing what you want.
What is common to all of these blocks? They are all surmountable. Many of them are imaginary, and your imagination makes them a lot worse than they really are.
What to do about it Step 1. Identify what you really want Most people have not got a clue about what they truly desire. If you don't know what you want, then you'll get whatever drifts your way, for better or worse. Clarity and conviction is everything in creating an extraordinary life. When you have a crystal clear picture of what you desire and you feel excited and exhilarated about it, then you are at a good starting point to manifest this in your life. So let's get started. Do this now - write a letter to Santa Claus listing everything - and I mean EVERYTHING you want in life. Give yourself permission to dream again. No restrictions, no limits - go. If you do nothing else out of this article, do this one thing.
Step 2. Change your beliefs about what you think you can or cannot do Often the difference between those who achieve and those who do not comes down to the use of little grey cells between the ears. Let's make your grey matter work for you. Write down what you believe about your life and yourself. Start by completing the following sentences: "Right now my life is...." "What I believe about myself and my abilities is..." "What is holding me back is..."
What beliefs would be more empowering? What kind of beliefs would your personal mentors/heroes have about themselves? Would Oprah, Roger Federer, Lance Armstrong, Bill Gates have YOUR beliefs? Write down NEW beliefs that would empower you for better results. Read them every day. Repeat them ad infinitum until they rewire your brain's software.
Step 3 Dissolve the emotional blocks that come up Often when we decide to upgrade our life we have an emotional reaction that comes up due to past conditioning. Negative thoughts like, "Oh I don't deserve that...", or "I am not smart enough", "I don't have enough time..." appear and then you get a knot in your stomach and you stall on your dreams. You feel bad and nothing happens. Your dream goes back on the shelf.
These emotions are all energy. Learn how to release this energy simply by focussing your attention on the most intense part of the emotion and allow it release. You'll release the grip that old emotions have had on you and you will be able to take actions much more easily to manifest your desires.
Step 4 Develop the habits of Absolute Productivity Changing your life requires energy, time, and a focussed approach. Invest in learning about the skills of productivity and efficiency. You can learn more about this in my E Book Absolute Productivity due for release October 30 2006.
Step 5 Develop the skills and knowledge you need in order to get what you want Your current life situation is a result of prior beliefs, knowledge and skills. If you want something different, you need to commit to ongoing learning and growth. Immerse yourself, your environment, on the topics that will launch your life to a new level. If you want a promotion from manager to executive, read leadership books, listen to CDs, and network with those kinds of people. If you want to start your own business, meet existing entrepreneurs, shop for some good business books, read the business pages in the paper, take a small business course. You get the idea -soak yourself in the knowledge and skills that will move you forward towards your dreams.
Step 6 Develop and work a plan Start with the end result - what you really, really want. From there ask yourself, 'what needs to happen before I get/do this?' Keep asking this question after each step you come up with. Break all the steps in to small, manageable chunks of activity. Break it all down in to the smallest baby steps. For example, if you want to publish a book, you need to find a publisher, you need to write a book promotion package, you need to write the book itself, you need a plan for the book, and you need an idea for the book. The first step is to spend an hour or two brainstorming the topic/story you most want to write.
As you follow the plan, check the results and review the plan. If it is not working, change the plan, not the goal!
Step 7 Enlist support There is power in numbers. There is motivation in accountability. Don't go it alone! This is far too lonely and difficult a path. All successful people have a team working with them. Roger Federer has a coach, a physiotherapist, a massage therapist, a business manager, a girlfriend, and sponsors that all support him in being the #1 tennis player in the world. You need a team too. Enlist a mentor, network with people who have the results you want, tell your friends about your goal, visit on line forums, and hire a coach.
Step 8 Celebrate effort as well as achievement Enjoy the process of growth, development, and transforming your dreams into reality. If you are not enjoying the ride, you'll be too tired, peeved, and exhausted to enjoy getting to the destination. Success is a by-product of who you are, not of what you do. So enjoy YOU!
