Three tips for getting out of a slump (or making space for an even more joyous life!)

Some days just suck!

Perhaps the stars are out of alignment, perhaps SAD has got you, perhaps it's just the Universe's way of getting your attention that something's off.

I believe these days are gifts and a sign that something bigger awaits you if you'd just allow it in.

Whatever it is, the best way through that I know is to make space for the whispers and for more of what you'd rather have. Here are three powerful tools you can use.

1. Ask yourself: what's bugging me most in my home? Yesterday in the space of less than an hour, I took the magazines and bits of paper off my living room floor that had been there since Saturday's Integrity day when we created our vision maps, I took a whole load of empty plant pots off my deck (in the snow too) and took them to my car to go to the charity shop, I grabbed some more pots from my storage unit and added those, I vacuumed the whole house and I took everything off my desk and put it in a box (temporarily).

Felt so good.

2. Stop doing something! What are you willing to give up? I guarantee there is something you're doing that's draining your energy. Something you think you 'have' to do, something you're in the habit of doing, something you've agreed to and no longer feel passionate about.....

This week I asked my clients to commit to stopping one thing.

Here are some of the things they've committed to. See if they give you any ideas for what you might stop.

  • stop being the treasurer of a group it's hard to get to now that she's doing a yoga class
  • stop drinking coffee
  • stop watching TV in the morning while she gets ready for work. Replace it with peaceful music.
  • another client: stop watching TV in the evening. Replace it with reading a book she's inspired by.
  • stop waiting for her husband to go to bed. Replace it with going to bed when she's ready, so she's fresh in the morning.
  • stop surfing the internet at work. Replace it with getting up to take a break for a couple of minutes.
  • stop putting things down on the kitchen counter when she comes in the door. Put them where they belong.

And I took my own advice: mine is to stop complaining about the weather. I'm aware I've been indulging this habit for a while and it lowers my energy and focuses my attention on what I don't like. And I'm pretty sure it must be boring for everyone else too.

Stop doing anything that lowers your energy and you'll make space for something you really want.

3. Write morning pages with a twist: Morning pages are Julia Cameron's way of decluttering your head and getting your creativity flowing. Write 3 pages every morning as fast as you can. No thinking about it too much, no correcting grammar. Doesn't matter if it doesn't make sense or you repeat yourself or even if you write a few times "I don't know what to write".

Your thoughts will tumble out on the page and stop rumbling around in your head. You'll be amazed at the junk that comes out. Better out than in, right?

First thing in the morning is a great time to do this - along with any other morning rituals you've chosen, you'll set yourself up for a great day.

I've been writing morning pages for years off and on. But I'd become a bit slack. Writing in a small journal, not writing a whole 3 pages, not letting it be a stream of consciousness .....

I've started writing morning pages with a twist. Take a big pad and write three pages as above. When you're done, shred those pages in your shredder if you have one. If not, rip them up and put them in the recycling bin. Why would you want to keep them. Makes no sense. Shredding is so satisfying!

Now I'm keeping my journal for more inspiring thoughts.

So those are the three tips. There's one more though.

Now you've created some space - what would you like to intentionally add?

When I thought about what I'd add I immediately thought about photography and what's more -I felt quite emotional about it - a good sign it's something important I'd been neglecting.

I've made a commitment to take one photograph a day for the next 30 days - come rain or more snow - that's not a complaint by the way :-)

To really solidify your new habit, tell someone, tell many! The more public your commitment, the more likely you'll be to carry through. When you ask me in 30 days how my photography is coming along I want to be able to tell you I did it and what happened as a result.

So go for it. Take the three actions above and whether you're in a slump or you'd just like to UP the quality of your life, you'll see results.

Then, what luscious treat will you add? You're worth it.
