More on the Law of Attraction and Coaching |

These are notes from a presentation I gave recently to the members of the International Coach Federation about how I incorporate Law of Attraction principles in to my coaching.
The movie ‘The Secret’ has been showcased on Oprah, twice. Since then there has been huge acclaim for it. There has also been plenty of criticism.
The naysayers and satirists have done a fair job of making the Law of Attraction seem a load of bunk!
As a coach and student of the Law of Attraction, the Law of Attraction is about more than just manifesting ‘stuff’. This is especially true when coaching around principles of the Law of Attraction.
First some basics: What is Law of Attraction?
It is based on quantum physics and the study of subatomic particles and the discovery that at the very core of every bit of matter is that we are all energy.
Energy has certain properties:
o It vibrates o It travels in waves o It has different frequencies o Energy is attracted to other energy of the same frequency or vibration.
The implications of quantum physics in relation to our thoughts: Our thoughts and feelings are energy vibrations.
By deduction, our thoughts and feelings are attracted to other energy packets of the same vibration. This can feel good, or it can feel bad.
Here is thus the implication for coaching and personal development (the secret):
If we attract things that are of the same vibration of our predominant thoughts and feelings, then we can consciously attract more of what we really do want and avoid things we don’t.
We are no longer victims of circumstance, but conscious, deliberate creators of experiences.
HOWEVER, it is not just about thinking positive, vision boards, and affirmations, or wishful thinking as the critics say.
Living a life in resonance with the Law of Attraction is all about development of the whole human being, and not applying a few magic tricks to our desires.
Learning about Law of Attraction has radically transformed how I coach.
It has also radically transformed how I experience my life on a daily basis.
Three ways it has altered how I experience coaching and living:
1. There is an absence of resistance in my life. * This is an absence of worry, stress, obligation, duty, and pressure. * There is instead the sense of flow, ease, fun, and effortlessness.
2. Letting go of outcomes What this means is my focus is on the quality of my feelings in any given moment. It is not about what happens to me, but how I feel about what happens to me.
My feelings are the measure of my success, not the achievement of my goals.
3. I focus on my intentions and desires and what I truly want rather than worrying about how it is all going to come together.
Overall, it is living in a state of gratitude and joy.
How does all this translate in to my coaching work?
Coaching is now NOT:
* Goal setting 101 * Accountability and reporting structures * Results-oriented
Coaching IS:
* About helping my clients the coolest, best version of their own life; a life that is authentically their own and feels fantastic every day * About expanding a client’s desires; helping them to open to the possibilities and find the answer to ‘what more for me’ * About self-empowerment, regardless of circumstances. What I wish for every client is that they find a sense of peace and joy in the moment NOW rather than down the track
How do I do this? What techniques do I use? What is the process I use?
Three things I focus on in coaching:
1. Developing awareness.
This is about developing awareness of how thoughts and feelings underpin behaviour and choices and thus results. This is challenging assumptions, questioning motives, and getting to the core of issues.
It is also about developing intuition. Intuition is that gut instinct, that little voice at the back of your head.
2. Energy management. * This is helping the clients develop the skills to release energy when it comes up for them, usually in the form of a fear of some sort. Fear energy is the number one dream killer, and also the number one ‘feel bad’ emotion. It does not serve anyone. Being able to release it is very empowering and allows the client to think more clearly about the issue, and more importantly to feel better about the issue. It de-paralyses the client. * Releasing techniques are various: these include the Emotional Freedom Technique, Sedona method, visualisation exercises, journal exercises, physical exercise –all work, can work in combination, and the trick is to try many different ones to find the ones that work for that client. * On the flip side, enhancement of the client’s good feelings (gratitude, pleasure, joy) is also a key component of the coaching process
3. Environments. * Environments are integral to the client’s well being. Effective environmental design can enhance or detract from the client’s emotional and energetic vibrations, so attention to supportive environments is integral to sustainable change and development. Environments include relationships, physical surroundings, clothes, car, knowledge and skills.
Fundamental underlying principles of LOA and coaching:
Coaching is about the coach.
What do I mean by this? Being a great coach means creating an inspiring environment for the client that helps them open the space to their own possibilities. To be an inspiring environment, as a coach I need to focus on my own life, my own feelings, and living my own best life. This makes sure my own energy is clear and clean so I can sense my own intuition. In this way the coaching is about the coach.
It’s all about the energy.
I coach from intuition, note the energy I feel, and trust my inner voice in observations about what is going on for the client.
It’s not about the goal; it’s about the now.
Obsessing bout the goal does not help either coach or client, as it stirs up the problem of the ‘how’. What is more important is how they are feeling in the moment – is their energy feeling good, or not – and focus on releasing that. The solution often appears to them afterwards. This is different to solution-finding. It is like clearing the decks, or wiping the slate screen so they can allow their own intuition to guide them.
Is LOA bunk?
I don’t know.
What I do know however is that it is far easier and more fulfilling way to live and a far more powerful and rewarding way to coach.
